Mediahuis E-commerce obtains Thuiswinkel Waarborg Sustainability Certificate
Mediahuis E-commerce, part of Mediahuis Nederland, has obtained the prestigious Thuiswinkel Waarborg Sustainability Certificate. This recognition underscores the serious steps taken by Mediahuis' e-commerce team to make online sales more sustainable.
Sustainability as a core value in e-commerce
Although e-commerce is often associated with waste, returns, and excessive packaging, Mediahuis E-commerce proves that it can be done differently. Through seven webshops, the company offers carefully selected products to readers of Mediahuis' various newspaper titles. “We only sell products that have proven their quality and whose dimensions and product specifications are accurate,” says Ben Mulder, responsible for E-commerce at Mediahuis. "As a result, our return rate is below 3%, while the Dutch average is around 11%. What's more, we never destroy returns: we process them into surprise boxes or donate them to charities."
Packaging and transport: conscious and green
Mediahuis E-commerce also invests in sustainable logistics. For example, the packaging process is optimized to limit the use of outer boxes, and a conscious choice is made to use more expensive but environmentally friendly transport, such as electric vehicles.
Structural approach with Thuiswinkel Sustainability Program
To safeguard and further develop these efforts, Mediahuis E-commerce committed itself to the Thuiswinkel Sustainability Program. Bas de Vries, Operational Lead, led the process of inventorying all sustainability measures. “We were already doing a lot of good, but the program really helped us to look at sustainability in a structural and strategic way,” says De Vries. “Together with our partners, we feel strongly committed to further investing in a sustainable future for e-commerce.”
The certification program covers six core themes: strategy, circular economy, sustainable product range, packaging, delivery, and returns. Mediahuis E-commerce has formulated objectives for each theme and made agreements with all relevant chain partners. These have been laid down in a multi-year sustainability strategy. Thuiswinkel.org closely monitors progress and provides annual recertification.
