Cookie Policy

Introduction

On our websites and apps (hereinafter: platforms), we and third parties use cookies and similar technologies, such as JavaScripts, web beacons and SDKs (hereinafter: cookies). Cookies are technologies that collect and use information.

Cookies may also be used to process personal data. When we process your personal data, we naturally comply with the applicable privacy legislation. More information about how we handle your personal data can be found here.

Mediahuis Nederland participates in and complies with the specifications and policies of the IAB Europe Transparency & Consent Framework.

Below, you can read more about the cookies used on our platforms and the purposes for which they are used. Cookies for functional and (limited) analytical purposes, such as ensuring security, preventing fraud, detecting errors and technically delivering advertisements or content, are necessary for the proper functioning of the platform, to measure its use and to improve our services. These cookies are therefore always used, regardless of your privacy settings. For the other purposes listed below, cookies are only used if you have given your consent. By giving consent for one or more of these purposes, you also consent to (i) distinguishing your device from other devices based on information it automatically sends, such as an IP address or browser type, (ii) combining data from offline data sources with your online activities (including linking data collected online to your account information for the stated purposes when you are logged in), and (iii) linking different devices as belonging to you or your household.

In our cookie list, you will find an up-to-date overview of the cookies used by Mediahuis on its platforms.

Store and/or access information on a device

Cookies are used to store certain information on your device (for example, a cookie ID to recognise you) or to access certain information on your device (for example, information about your browser or your device’s advertising ID).

Functional

Functional cookies are necessary to ensure the platform works properly and to deliver the services you request. These cookies are therefore always used, regardless of your privacy settings. For example, these cookies remember your location, language and privacy settings, as well as your login details.

Advertising and content measurement, audience insights and product development

To determine which parts of the platform are most interesting to our visitors, we continuously try to measure, among other things with the help of third-party software, how many visitors come to the platform and what is viewed most. We use cookies for this.

The information we collect in this way is used to create statistics. These statistics give us insight into how often the platform, or a specific part of it, is visited, where visitors spend the most time, and so on. This enables us to make the structure, navigation and content of the platform as user-friendly as possible. We do not trace the statistics or other reports back to individuals.

We also use this information, together with Stichting Nationaal Media Onderzoek (“Stichting NMO”), to gain useful insights into how digital media is used in the Netherlands. More information about this national media research can be found here.

Certain analytical cookies are necessary to measure the use of the platform and to improve our services. These cookies are therefore always used, regardless of your privacy settings. If you have not given consent for advertising and content measurement, audience insights and product development, these cookies will only be used to a limited extent.

The cookies are used for:

  • Improving existing systems and software and developing new products.
  • Measuring the performance and effectiveness of advertisements you see or interact with.
  • Measuring the performance and effectiveness of content you see or interact with.
  • Applying market research to learn more about the audience that visits the platform and views advertisements.

Social media

The articles and videos you view on the platform can be “liked” or shared via social media using buttons. For these buttons to function, social media cookies from social media parties are used, so that these parties can recognise you when you want to “like” or share an article or video.

These cookies therefore make it possible for you to “like” or share content from the platform via social media. In addition, the social media parties may use the information they collect through these cookies, such as your browsing behaviour, to build a profile of you and show you targeted content or advertisements. For more information about the cookies placed by social media parties and the information they may collect with them, we refer you to the statements these parties provide on their own websites; see the links below. Please note that these statements may change regularly. We have no influence over this.

Personalised advertisements

The platform shows you advertisements. These advertisements are placed on the platform by us and/or third parties and are a necessary source of income for us, helping us finance our services. To make advertisements as relevant as possible, we try to tailor them to each visitor as much as possible.

To make these adjustments, we try to form a picture of your likely interests based on your demographic data, such as gender and age, and your browsing behaviour on our platforms. For this, we combine your account details with data collected online when you are logged in. Based on this information, we adapt the advertisements on our platforms and on third-party platforms for different groups of visitors. As a result, you may be included in a certain segment, such as “men aged 30 to 45, married with children and an interest in football”. This segment will then see different advertisements from the segment “woman, aged 20 to 30, unmarried and interested in travel”. We also use this information to show advertisements for our own products and services on third-party websites as accurately as possible.

To offer advertisements as accurately as possible, the information we collect about your browsing behaviour on our platforms, including personal data, is combined with information about your browsing behaviour on the platforms of affiliated parties that, like us, are part of the Mediahuis Group , in order to create shared group profiles. These shared group profiles are used to show you targeted advertisements on our platforms and on the platforms of these affiliated parties. More information about this can be found in our privacy statement .

The cookies are used for:

  • Selecting basic advertisements. This may involve the use of information about the context in which the advertisement is displayed, including information about content and the device, URL, IP address and non-precise geolocation. The frequency and order in which advertisements are shown may also be determined.
  • Building a profile about you and your interests in order to show you personalised advertisements that are relevant to you. This may involve collecting information such as your activities, interests, visits to our platforms, demographic information and/or location.
  • Showing personalised advertisements based on a user profile or other historical user data, including previous activities, interests, visits to our platforms, demographic information and/or location.

Personalised content

To make the content on the platform as relevant as possible, we try to tailor it to each visitor as much as possible. For example, by showing article suggestions based on articles you have previously viewed.

The cookies are used for:

  • Building a profile about you and your interests in order to show you personalised content that is relevant to you. This may involve collecting information such as your activities, interests, visits to our platforms, demographic information and/or location.
  • Showing personalised content based on a user profile or other historical user data, including previous activities, interests, visits to our platforms, demographic information and/or location.

Cookies by third parties

Various parties are often involved in the sale of advertising space, such as media agencies, advertising networks, and technology partners, hereinafter referred to as advertising parties. These are companies that act as intermediaries between website/app owners and advertisers. These advertising parties may use cookies via our platforms. This may also include parties that process data outside the EU. In your privacy settings, you will find more information about which third parties can place cookies on this platform, for what purposes, and how they are used. You can decide for yourself from which parties you want to accept cookies. If you have not agreed to certain purposes, third parties will not place cookies for those purposes.

You will find a link to your privacy settings on the platform.

Unforeseen cookies

Due to the way the internet, websites, and apps work, we may not always have insight into the cookies placed via the platform by third parties. This is particularly the case if the platform contains so-called embedded elements; these are texts, documents, images, or videos that are stored by another party but displayed via the platform. If you come across cookies on this platform that fall into this category and that we have therefore not mentioned above, please let us know. Alternatively, contact the third party directly and ask which cookies they placed, why they did so, what the lifespan of the cookie is, and how your privacy is safeguarded.

Changing privacy settings

Via your privacy settings, you can always withdraw your consent for the use of cookies for certain purposes. Here, you can also disable the use of cookies by specific parties. Please note that if you disable certain purposes or parties, certain functions of the platform may no longer work, such as the “like” or “share” button.

You will find a link to your privacy settings on the platform.
