In the very first episode: new developments in the Tanja Groen case
Crime isn’t just about what happens, but also about why. In the new biweekly crime podcast De Onderwereld from De Limburger, crime reporter Bas Dingemanse and host Bas van Mulken take you into the world of international drug routes, cold-blooded murders, and mysterious disappearances.
Each episode focuses on a current or relevant crime case: a murder investigation, a background story, a profile from the underworld, or a reconstruction.
New developments in the Tanja Groen case
The first episode opens with a cold case that has preoccupied the Netherlands and far beyond for years: the disappearance of Tanja Groen, the 18-year-old student who vanished one night in 1993 while cycling from Maastricht to her student room in Gronsveld.
Various search operations, massive media attention, a one-million-euro reward, a silent march, and an emotional appeal from her parents have yielded nothing. More than thirty years later, a prisoner in Belgium decides to speak up. Will there finally be a breakthrough in this unsolved case?
The Dutch investigative team finds the information compelling enough to cross the border multiple times to interview the Belgian prisoner in person. These new statements may lead to major new developments in the disappearance of Tanja Groen.
Limburg in the Web of International Crime
With the launch of its own crime podcast, De Limburger is fulfilling a long-cherished wish. “There are already some great crime podcasts out there, but I believe we’ve got something unique here. We’re showing just how crucial the players in Limburg’s underworld are to international crime. As far as I’m concerned, this isn’t a podcast limited to Limburg. Listeners and viewers are finally going to get to know an area that has been underrepresented for decades. Unfairly so, in our view,” says Dingemanse.
With De Onderwereld, De Limburger has deliberately chosen a combination of audio and video. This way, our journalism aligns even better with how an ever-growing audience consumes media today. Van Mulken: “By adding video, we’re offering more. It makes it more personal, more intense, and more raw. Whether you’re listening in the car or at the gym, or watching it at home on the couch.”
