Media group Mediahuis has announced plans to acquire DGN Groep (DGN), the company behind the online platforms ZorgKiezer, EnergieKiezer and DeGoedkoopsteNotaris. These platforms, which form the core of DGN, provide consumers with independent advice for comparing health insurance policies, energy providers and notary services.

With this strategic move, Mediahuis strengthens its position in the online comparison market and underscores its mission to help consumers make well-informed financial decisions.

As a leading player in the Dutch comparison market with over 25 years of experience, DGN assists more than 4 million consumers annually to make the best financial choices. The company has built a solid reputation for expert and reliable advice through its successful platforms:

  • ZorgKiezer: Helps consumers choose the most suitable health insurance policy under the most favourable conditions.
  • DeGoedkoopsteNotaris: Assists consumers in comparing and finding the most affordable notary in their region.
  • EnergieKiezer: Provides independent advice to users in selecting an energy provider that best meets their needs and will soon also offer guidance on buying heat pumps and home batteries.

Founded during the dot-com era above a student nightclub in Utrecht, DGN has grown over 25 years into a company with a team of 35 employees, headquartered at the Herengracht in Amsterdam. Its platforms have become the leading comparison sites for financial products and services, with approximately 20% of new health insurance policies in the Netherlands last year being arranged through ZorgKiezer. With this planned acquisition, DGN is entering a new phase of growth, benefiting both consumers and business partners.

Peter Ruys, founder of DGN: “I proudly look back on the past 25 years, during which I, together with a fantastic team, have built DGN Groep into a leading player in the comparison market. What started as a short-lived adventure – literally between pizza boxes – has, 25 years later, brought us to a dedicated team on the Herengracht in Amsterdam. The company and the team are ready for the next phase of growth, and I am confident that we will navigate this successfully under the strong wings of Mediahuis.”

Strategic growth for Mediahuis

For Mediahuis, this planned acquisition marks a significant milestone. The group is expanding its presence in the comparison market following the successful acquisition of Ireland’s Switcher.ie, a leading price comparison platform for energy, broadband, loans and mortgages.

Xavier van Leeuwe, CEO of Mediahuis Marketplaces: “The people and brands of DGN are truly impressive. We see this planned acquisition not only as an important and promising first step into the Dutch comparison market but also as a unique opportunity for joint growth. This enables us to further expand our services and provide even better support to DGN’s customers and partners.”

AFM approval

The acquisition is subject to approval by the Dutch Financial Markets Authority (Autoriteit Financiële Markten, AFM). Upon approval, the platforms will continue to operate with the same focus on expertise and reliability that consumers and business partners have come to expect. Peter Ruys, founder of DGN, will remain affiliated with Mediahuis as an advisor.
